Member Spotlight: Dr. Mabel Rivera A Journey of Dedication and Impact

Dr. Mabel Rivera’s journey in education stems from her unwavering desire to create a lasting impact on children, particularly those facing challenges in the classroom. With a background as both an elementary and special education teacher, she has experienced firsthand the transformative power of quality education for students at risk of learning difficulties. Dr. Rivera finds joy in helping children overcome obstacles, which has solidified her commitment to advocating for effective instructional practices that cater to diverse learners, especially those with exceptionalities.

Her passion for education led her to serve on the North Carolina Council for Exceptional Children (NC CEC) Board, where she has held various leadership roles, including Past President and Conference Co-Chair. Through these positions, Dr. Rivera has influenced policies, supported future educators, and advocated for equitable learning opportunities, extending her impact beyond the classroom. Her work has improved services at the state, national, and international levels.

In recognition of her contributions to the field, Dr. Rivera is the recipient of the NC DEC Distinguished Service Award and the NC CEC President's Award, highlighting her commitment to enhancing educational practices for students with exceptionalities.

As an Associate Professor and Director of Accreditation and Reporting, Dr. Rivera has developed a deep understanding of the intersection of policy and practice.
